MICROSTRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF TP-650 TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES

Abstract
QUASI-STATIC AND DYNAMIC TENSILE TESTS WERE PERFORMED AT ROOM AND HIGH TEMPERATURE TO INVESTIGATE THE MICROSTRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF TP-650 TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES PRODUCED BY PRE-TREATMENT MELT PROCESS (PTMP). IT WAS SHOWN THAT BOTH THE MATRIX AND THE COMPOSITE DEMONSTRATE SOME STRAIN-RATE SENSITIVITY AND THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE COMPOSITE MATERIAL WAS INFLUENCED BY THE ADDITION OF THE TIC PARTICLE (TICP). THE FRACTURE SURFACES FOR BOTH THE MATRIX AND THE COMPOSITE WERE EXPLORED USING A SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM) SHOWING THAT THE FAILURE OF THE COMPOSITE WAS CONTROLLED BY THE BRITTLE FRACTURE OF TICP FOLLOWED BY THE DUCTILE FRACTURE OF THE TITANIUM MATRIX.Downloads
